to the department of defense, quote, we are committed to working together to help forge a balanced bipartisan deficit reduction package to avoid damage to our national security, important domestic priorities, and our economy. joining us now from manchester, new hampshire one of the gang's members, democratic senator j n jeanne shaheen. great to have you on the program. >> mice to be with you. i would say, alex, it's not a new gang of six, i think but it does reflect a number of different groups that have been meeting and talking in the senate about the need to address sequestration, and i was part of the six of us who signed that letter in talking about what we could do to try and reassure the public, to reassure the markets, that we understand we've got to address this problem and we've got to do it in a way that provides certainty for businesses, for consumers, so that we have a long-term solution. >> senator, i want to get your thoughts, it is, i think, laudable that this is a bipartisan gang, as other gangs have been. four of the gang members, for lack of a better term, voted for the bud
will focus on local issues hitting the president on defense cuts. it's clear the 47% issue is a drag on romney's campaign. he went out of his way at every stop yesterday to show a more compassionate side. >> i've been across this country. i think the president cares about the people of america. i care about the people in america but i know how to help the people of america. with he have people that are hurting. we have people that are disabled and people who are poor. they need our help and receive our help. we're a charitable people. >> when asked how he can understand the problems of the middle class given his personal wealth, he tauted his massachusetts health care overhaul. >> don't forget i got everybody in my state insured. 100% of the kids in our state have health insurance. i don't think anything shows more empathy and care about the people of our state than that kind of record. >> the question was not about health care. romney went from the interview to a toledo rally where he then slammed the president's health care law. >> obama care is exhibit number one of the president'
in the campaign in a defensive posture, which is problematic. >> mark, is that the reason that the conversation was avoided? we heard so many times that governor romney would describe bain and his role there and the value of that company. we know it's private equities. we know how that game works, at least to some degree. none of us are wall street men and women in the conversation, but we know the realities of private equity. is this tape or some of the vision for bain capital the very reason we didn't hear him solidly defend that record because his vision was to harvest the profits of some of these companies they went in? >> well, i don't think we really know the reality, because we haven't had the longer discussion. we have a perception about them very shorthanded as mitt romney was doing in that tape. he was shorthanding what parlt of their business objective is. as part of that business objective, they saved weak companies. by saving weak companies, those companies didn't go out of business. they did, in fact, save lots of jobs that probably would have -- that would have been lost because
issues, attacking the president on sequestration, the looming defense budget cuts effectively linking defense and national security to the economy which has been his primary message. the campaign has been flooding reporters with numbers and he mentioned them today, suggesting that sequestration cuts would effectively have an impact on 168,000 jobs, costing 168,000 jobs in the state. he said 136,000, 68,000 among small businesses specifically. and he was here with people in this critical battleground who he said have been to battle before. these are people in the military community, a lot of veterans here at american legion hall where he was speaking that he hopes will support his message of american strength through strength and not through weakness militarily. >> i have been a little puzzled by the campaign's posture on this because it was a republican and democratic agreement, the automatic triggers for these automatic cuts from sequestration if they didn't agree to a budget deal, and they didn't agree to a budget deal so this was something that the president and john boehner agreed

that they believe they can put the obama campaign back on the defensive. i agree with joe. it's surprising that they are putting this forward and it has to be because in doing so they are now forcing the media to ask those questions. you know, to fact check president obama, to write these stories about how romney's going to call him a liar, which then sort of deluge into something that takes over. right now romney doesn't have any card to play. the last thing they can do is make americans believe that when barack obama talks about the successes of the last four years, that he is simply lying. >> well, don't say that he has any more cards because there may be more tapes on obama at the rate he's going. joe madison, alicia menendez, thank you for your time tonight. >> thanks, rev. >>> ahead, he's been in hiding from the romney campaign but when they told george w. bush to go away, they probably didn't mean go toll the cayman islands for an investment conference. >>> and hundreds and thousands voting today in iowa. it's a big day for this election. stay with us. >> this is the movement of our
middle class families, that was almost an entirely defensive ad. and that quinnipiac/"new york times" poll showed why. there was a question in there that asked, does obama, does romney care about the middle class, the rich, the poor, or everyone equally? most polls the that give four choices usually get scattered answers. 58% of the people in ohio said that mitt romney's policies favored the rich. by contrast, 59% said that obama's policies favored either everybody equally or the middle class. that's a 17-point gap. and i think the auto rescue is part of it. those bain ads are part of it. ken blackwell, the former republican secretary of state was on cnn today. and he said it was just like '04. bush roughed up kerry in the summer and kerry never recovered. and he didn't say romney will never recover, but the implication was, romney's in a heap of trouble. >> chris redfern, who is the chairman of the democratic party in ohio also with us tonight. chris. a very untenable position that governor kasich is being placed in, to go out and talk about the economy when it's all positive for wo
mode. he was put on the defensive over the 47% remark, so he's got to go out and illustrate all these new examples of empathy and compassion, even if that contradicts what he said last week. he's gotten in trouble because he didn't mention veterans during his acceptance speech at the convention. okay. well, now they're going to throw on a veterans event and give a speech to the veterans about, you know, isn't it terrible that 23 million people looking for work and, in fact, he's given it to a rather well-heeled crowd in the second wealthiest county in the nation. >> so, dana, does that kind of reactivity give you any confidence that such a mind could be in a position such as commander in chief of the nation. >> well, he laid out a case today about when he is commander in chief, he is going to spend an extra trillion dollars on dfers and yet he's also going to cut taxes and yet also going to reduce the debt. so i believe that if he can do that, then it will be worth us watching. >> you know -- >> go ahead, karen. >> you mention these ads -- that the president is running the ads i
